will my phone ring when locked

In settings, do not disturb, silence is set to : only when iPhone is locked. How then can I receive notice of a call - vibrate?

iPhone SE, iOS 10.3.3

Those settings (Always and Only while iPhone is locked) only apply when Do Not Disturb is turned on (either Manual or Scheduled). Your phone will ring (and/or vibrate) when locked if you don't have Do Not Disturb turned on unless prevented by the Ring/Silent switch and its related settings.

Sounds so simple but in "do not disturb" under Silence that little blue checkmark next to "Only while iPhone is locked" , "incoming calls and notifications will be silenced while phone is locked" had me confused. Thanks so much for your help, and have a good day.

OK so at least now I don't feel so dumb. As you could likely tell first time iPhone owner.
