Apple ID information has been updated

I received an email last night from "Appleid@id.apple.com" that read:

"Dear XXXXX

The following changes to your Apple ID, xxxxxx@mac.com were made on August 5, 2017 at 2:06:50 AM GMT:

Billing Address

If you did not make these changes or you believe an unauthorized person has accessed your account, you should change your password as soon as possible from your Apple ID account page at https://appleid.apple.com.

I had not made any changes or accessed my account for any reason. The Apple email & email address looked legit. I opened my account in Safari (did not click the link in the email) to find that all my Apple ID info seemed intact & correct. I changed my password but am concerned why I would receive a notice like this from Apple when I didn't make any changes myself. My credit card on file with Apple ID expires this month - would something like an expired credit card automatically trigger such an email?

Thanks.

I also received the identical email - addressed to me by name, and apparently from Apple. (I hovered the cursor over the web address.) However, I did not click on the email link. Instead, I entered the appleid url in the field of my browser and went directly to the Apple website - just in case - and changed my password.

My billing address was unchanged. I've been unable to determine why Apple sent me the alert.

I believe you may be right about the expired credit card triggering this email. My card on file expires later this month as well and I just got an email identical to yours except mine said "Billing Information" instead of "Billing Address." I'm going to change my password just in case but I believe we both probably got this email because of expiring payment info.
