It may help to drag out your window until you can see some of the grey desktop behind the page.
Dragging from off the page prevents you accidentally selecting something on the page before the drag.
Definitely works in Pages 6.2 without holding down anything on my MacBook Pro.

Hey Barry,
Thanks so much for your detailed response. I did know how to do it that way. However, in the past (I've been a MacUser 20 years), we could select multiple objects, say 20-30, by dragging across them. Is there any way to do that now in the current pages. It's a little cumbersome to command click when the number of object is high.
Thanks,
lance
Hi - I have tried every way described above --> shift or command. It does not work for me. It selects the first object but the other pictures in the document remain 'untouched'. Really painful having to do the 'one by one' exercise when the doc is full of objects. Any other suggestion? Thanks MO
Hi Lance,
Click the first object to select it.
Command-Click subsequent objects to add them to the selection.
Command click selected objects to remove them from the selection.
Tested with shapes in a Pages 5.6.2 word processing document, and with shapes and a text box in separate sections of a Pages 5.6.2 page layout document. The shapes can be set to Stay on Page or to Move with Text. The selection can contain a mixture of both settings. The selection can include shapes on a single page, on separate pages in the same section, or in separate sections of the document.
The images are of the mixed object test with the page layout document test:
The left (or upper, depending on how the two images are placed by the forum software) shows the page thumbnails of the two sections with the three shapes and a text box placed randomly. All four objects are selected, although this does not show in the thumbnails.
The second image shows the same objects after choosing Align Objects > Left from the Arrange menu.

The ability to drag a virtual box around a cluster of document objects remains another means of multiple selection. You can then depress the cmd-key, and click to deselect anything that you do not want in the selection process.
"Hi - I have tried every way described above --> shift or command. It does not work for me. It selects the first object but the other pictures in the document remain 'untouched'."
Which is exactly what it should do.
Clicking on an object will select it.
Clicking on an object while pressing the shift or the command key will toggle its state between 'selected' and 'not selected', but will NOT have any effect on other objects.
Clicking a second, unselected object will add it to the collection of selected objects.
Clicking a second, selected oject will remove it from the collection of selected objects.
If you want to select ALL objects:
Click on one object to select it. Then press command-A toadd ALL remaining objects to the selection.
If you want to select ALL of a group of objects within a convenient (and rectangular) area:
Click and hold in an empty area above and to the left of all the objects.
Drag down and right to form a selection rectangle that contains or touches all of the objects to be selected.
(I dragged a bit too far down, causing the page to scroll up, putting the top of the rectangle out of sight.)
Note that ALL of the objects enclosed by or touched by the selection rectangle now display a blue boundary and handles at each corner and in the missle of each edge.
Release the mouse button.
All objects (including the small arrow I used to represent the mouse pointer—top left) remain selected.

Barry
Press and hold either the shift key, or cmd key, and then click the objects on one, or subsequent pages until they are all selected.
