Java fails

When attempting to delete the cache on both versions through

Java Control Panel > General > "(Temporary Internet Files) Settings..." (button) >"Delete files..." (button),

The cache is stored here by default:

~/Library/Application Support/Oracle/Java/Deployment/cache

Does that folder exist. If so, what are the permissions on that folder?

Not that it would be affected by the Cache, but I discovered you also have to enable java in the browser on the Java Control panel under Security.

Had same issue but found a workaround. Just create a new OS X user account, log into it and Verify Java from Safari there. By some magic reason it worked for me and my collegue.

I have already uninstalled and installed SDK versions 1.8.0_144 and early access 1.8.0_152-ea-b05, both showing the same problem. Under the early access version, the error message on the Verify Java Version is a plain "Plug-in Failure".

I just installed update 144 from Java.com and after restarting Safari, it asked to enable java for Java.com and the verifier worked.

The Java web applet plugin does have a "Run Safe" option:

You have to hold down the Option key prior to clicking the popup menu. That may enable it to work with the Citrix Receiver stuff.

As to the Version, there are two types of Java, one that runs on the OS (Mac, Windows, Linux, etc) and one that runs in a Web Browser. If you install from java.com, it will be the web applet plug-in only (although you can actually use the web plug-in to run Java apps on the OS).

If you go to Oracle and download a Java SE version, it will install both. The version information in Terminal will not show the Java.Com web plug-in version, only the Java SE version that runs on the Mac OS itself.

So, you have an older Java SE version installed, but since there is a later version, the older one is likely permanently blocked in Safari.

I failed to mention that the Java website rarely ever validates that Java is installed on Sierra.

Are you asking about Java or Citrix Receiver? You have Citrix Receiver selected in your screen shot.

Does Java applets work on your enabled websites?

If not, on that dialog, hold down Option key and click on the Ask popup menu. See if you can disable "Run in Safe Mode"

Java 8 update 144 (installed both the JRE and the SDK, fresh install on a new MacBook Pro)

Safari - Preferences - Security - Plug-in Settings... - Java - java.com -> It's On and "Run in Safe Mode" is selected

System Preferences - Java - Security -> "Enable Java content in the browser" is enabled

Java won't verify on the Oracle website (Verify Java Version). Error message is:

FailedDownloadException

Unable to load resource:

https://www.java.com/ga/applet/verify/JavaDetection.jar

I booted in Safe Mode and have the same problem.

Any idea?

More information on this. The configuration on my old MacBook Pro on which Java is running perfectly fine:

macOS X El Capitan 10.11.6

Safari 10.1.2

Java 8 update 141

The differences between my old and new MacBook Pro are the OS and the version of Java. So, I thought I could install Java 8 update 141 instead of 144 on the new one and give it try. Result: It doesn't work, same problem as with update 144.

I then tried older versions Java, starting with the oldest possible version of Java 8 and making my way up to newer versions one by one. Some of them just won't install because they are too old. Some of them would install but Safari won't let them run because they are out of date, no matter what you try to make them run, Safari won't let you do it.

When I reached Java 8 update 25, I was able to make it run in Safari but I got my same old error message of

FailedDownloadException

Unable to load resource:

https://www.java.com/ga/applet/verify/JavaDetection.jar

So, it looks like the problem is not in Java but in macOS Sierra. I'll keep digging but my knowledge of macOS is limited...

As you found out, that is completely fruitless because macOS blocks older versions of Java. Much like Flash, it is a high risk threat vector, so old versions are blocked when a thread is identified or when a new update comes out.

Once again, ignore the Java verification. It may or may not work.

Are the websites enabled to use Java in the Safari Preferences?

So, you've installed the current JRE. If you want a .jar or OS program to run, you need the current JDK. Java is currently at .144 so i would imagine that .131 would be blocked.

I don't know what the problem may be but this is what I see in Safari…

Does Java verify in safe mode? And does it still after a normal reboot?

I just ran into this problem, and the fix for me (running Yosemite) is to *not* run in Safe Mode in the Safari Security preferences.

Safari Preferences > Security tab > Allow Plug-ins (checked) > Plug-in Settings > Java (checked) > hold option while selecting pulldown menu > change to On and uncheck Safe Mode.

Before delving deeper into this: what exactly are you trying to achieve? Where do you need Java for?
