Ongoing numbering of rows (1.1, 1.2, 1.3.)

Hi guys,

does anybody know a trick or formula that gives me the ability to number ongoing rows automatically? Especially for ongoing numbers divided by a period sign: 1.1 1.2 1.3 etc.

In Excel for example I just put 1.1 in the very first row and if i pull the lower right handle of the cell (lower middle yellow handle in Numbers) down over several rows, Excel automatically puts in 1.1 1.2 1.3 1.4 etc.

Since I need this kind of row numbering for my quote and invoice documents I would be so happy to finally find a solution for this.

Thanks in advance!

Christian

Hi Christian,

Numbers will do the same thing, but requires two entries to establish the increment you want for the list.

Here I entered 1.1 and 1.2, selected both cells, then dragged the yellow Fill control down to fill the rest of the column.

umbers will not automatically extend the list if you add more rows to the table. After adding the new rows, you will need to select the last two terms (2.5 and 2.6), then drag the fill handle as before.

HI Christian,

Numbers will do that with text ending in a number, using the same method as above (see column B in the example below, where the seed was the single value "B1"), but given a pair of numerical values, Numbers will continue the arithmetic series using the increment established by the first two numbers.

To get the series you want (a constant numeral, followed by a period, then the series of counting numbers), you'll need to turn to a formula. The formula used in the example below is shown below the table. Enter this formula in cell A1, then fill down.

" but what if the numbering after the period should be independent of the number of the actual document's row? For example if the cell is in the document's 22nd row but in context of the invoice actually is row x.8"

22-8 is 14, so use the same formula with -14 appended to ROW():

For the alphanumeric series in column B, start with the text string followed by 1 in row 15, and fill down.
