managing my apple id

i have recently been sent an email from apple to tell me that someone has got into my account without my consent and has locked me out and that i have to unlock my account to change my password. and i went into my account to change it and i cant remember the old password so that i can change to put a new one

MacBook, macOS Sierra (10.12.6)
