Epson Stylus RX620. Won't scan

When I try to use the scanner thro' Smart Panel, I get the message " Unable to access Scanner because it is not ready or another Application is using it. Please make sure that the scanner is on and connected to your computer, or close all scanning apps." As far as I know there are no apps open and the Epson RX620 must be connected as I can print.
Any ideas on a cure for this problem please?

iMac G5, Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Further to my earlier message. By deleting each Epson app, I think that I might have found the problem,but still need help. I have one App left i.e. Epson Scanner Monitor .app. The problem is, when I try to move it to the Trash, I get the following message. " The Epson Scanner Monitor.app cannot be moved to the Trash because it is open." I have tried dragging it and also tried to force quit, to no avail. Any ideas on how to remove this app? Or to close it?
