macOS Sierra 10.12.6 Messages freezes

I have an iMac; (late 2015) memory; 8 GB 1867 MHz DDR3 running the latest macOS Sierra 10.12.6. Messages was working just fine for me and now suddenly it does not. I am not certain if it was due to the latest OS release or not. When I open the app on my computer, it just freezes. I am unable to click on a conversation or do anything with it. When I close the app it takes for over to close or I have to force quit the app. Help.

Shutdown the mac, then restart it while holding the Shift key (this is SafeMode), it is very slow, login, then see if the same happens,

If not, restart normal (some system caches are cleared);

If the same happens in the SafeMode, restart normal, before doing anything else run an etrecheck list and post it here, go to etrecheck,com

read what it does, download and run.
