A way to start in target mode late 2008 macbook pro with no FW?

I have in a mid 2010 macbook pro that I would like to get into Target mode. It has FW 800 and a mini-display port which looks like Thunderbolt but from what I have read, as it doesn't have a thunderbolt symbol, doesn’t function asa thunderbolt (that came later)

The only other mac I have access to is a 2008 Macbook Pro, which unfortunately has no FW. It has also has a mini-display port, which looks like Thunderbolt but apparently, from what I have read, isn't a Thunderbolt port (that came later).

I booted in to target mode on the 2010 macbook Pro and tried a thunderbolt cable between the two, but, as expected, the drive never appears.

I have a Western Digital external drive that has FW800 and USB connections, and I was wondering if I could daisy chain the Target Mode 2010 Macbook Pro through the Western Digital external drive and then connect via the USB to the 2008 Macbook Pro.

I have tried and it doesn't seem to work, but I was wondering if I have missed a trick somewhere.

Any advise or suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2010), OS X El Capitan (10.11.4), 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
