Grey Screen

Dear Community:

I have had the scary Grey Screen. I have done the PRAM & SMC, and ran a hardware check. Nothing is showing up as an issue. Any ideas? Thank you so much.

When a Mac halts at a Gray/Blue/Black screen BEFORE the Apple logo appears, the causes could be any of the following:

  • Hardware failure
  • Startup drive is not recognized as valid and bootable.
  • Essential macOS system software is missing, incorrectly moved or renamed, or corrupted.
  • A firmware update is required.

The following would be the recommended basic next steps to try:

  1. Boot up your Mac in Safe mode.
  2. Boot up your Mac in Recovery mode.

  3. While in this mode, run the Disk Utility's First Aid to see if there are any drive errors. If it doesn't find any go to the next step.

  4. Boot up your Mac in Single-User mode.

    • Use the Terminal command: /sbin/fsck -fy to check the drive for errors.
    • You may need to run this several times or until you get the message: The volume <volume_name> appears to be OK.
    • Type: reboot to exit single-user mode.
  5. Boot up your Mac in Recovery mode and re-install macOS.
