How can I get my iMac to recognize a Logitech C920 webcam? Is there a way to use an external webcam rather than the one built in to my iMac running 10.12.6?

it's not an Apple issue, you need to see if the thing is compatible with the version of Mac OS you have installed and an iMac. You also need to see if you followed the manufactures installation instructions to the letter. If it is compatible and you followed the install instructions then you need to contact Logitech for support.
From what I read in their manual it's designed for MS Windows only.
Works in USB UVC mode with Mac OS 10.6 and later and works with FaceTime.

The camera was/is working correctly. I figured out that I just need to change the input in each app in which I use the camera. Thanks for the help!
