iPhone 7 taptic engine or home button?

I cracked the screen on my iPhone 7 the day before I got the case. A few days later, the home button stopped working. I had the screen fixed and the guy said it might also fix the home button, but it didn't so I ordered a new button to replace it with. However, when I double tap the home button (tap, not press) it still brings the screen down like it's supposed to, but the home button doesn't work for anything else so I think it's just having trouble sensing the pressure when I press down on it.

Is it a problem with the taptic engine or the home button itself? I don't want to replace the home button and lose my chance to have the Touch ID back if I don't have to.

OK. I would amend my statement above then slightly:

In the future take or send an iPhone that needs repair to an Apple Store or Authorized Apple Service Center.

This was a mistake. iPhones are not user serviceable. Apple will no longer be able to help you with this iPhone.

In the future, take an iPhone that needs repair to an Apple Store or Authorized Apple Service Center.

There isn't an Apple Store anywhere near me I'd need to drive hours to get to one. The home button stopped working before I ever brought my phone anywhere to get it fixed so that has nothing to do with it. I just want to know what part I need.
