I have been using my iMac since 2013 with MS Office. Today a dialog box appears asking me to input my Office Product ID. I have no idea where the product ID is and the dialog box has blocked me from shutting down my Mac.

Your product ID was shipped to you when you purchased MS Office. That information (we don't know how you bought it) may either be in your emails if bought electronically or look at the original media if you got it on DVD. If you still cannot locate it then you can research your Time Machine backup for the email. If you bought it from the Mac App Store look in your purchased tab on the Mac App Store.

Otherwise you will need to contact Microsoft as it's their product. As you are likely getting, keeping these codes safeguarded is critical. I keep mine with my 1Password information just in case for the same reason.

Haven't used a Microsoft product for 18 years, for this very reason. They want money for a subscription. Apple's Pages and Numbers are comparable products that will open and save MS files. Buy them once and you own them forever, including updates.

You can also get similar (free) programs at OpenOffice.org.
