Why won't my iPhone 5S sync up?

I have an iPhone 5S 16 GB and recently updated from iOS 8.4.x to iOS 10.3.3 and as I assumed it has been nothing but trouble.
My current issue is that when I try to sync on my phone and computer (iTunes) I get the same message: "The iPhone cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the selected items."


In iTunes with my phone selected on the Summary page it currently shows that I have 5.02 GB of free space. I cleaned out .5 GB of photos and probably another .5 GB of data and such recently.


On my iPhone in the Storage area it shows:
Used - 10.62 GB

Available - 1.6 GB


So there is a discrepancy between what the phone shows and what iTunes shows. Additionally, my iPhone shows 29 updates available while my iTunes shows 5 updates available.


Whenever I try to sync, it gets to step 3 or 4 of 6 and then stops and shows the same message over and over. Is there any way to fix this other than a total reset?

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities! It sounds like you are having issues with your iPhone since updating to iOS 10. First, for the issue with the difference between your storage on the device versus iTunes, take a look at this article to Check the storage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Specifically:

If storage on an iOS device differs from what you see in iTunes

Since iTunes categorizes cached files as Other, reported usage for Music or Videos might differ. To view usage on your iOS device, go to Settings > General > Usage > Manage Storage.

For the issue with your apps needing to be updated on the phone showing differently from your iTunes, I suggest connecting to Wi-Fi and allowing your device to update the apps. Once that is done, go ahead and try to sync the iPhone to iTunes.
