Anyone using Poser 7 with a Mac Pro?

I use Poser from efrontier 'recreationally' to add an occasional comical animation to my class lectures. My dinosauer iMac (the bowling ball with the chrome neck and 17" screen) could handle Poser 4, but is overwhelmingly inadequate for the more current versions--P7 has just been released. This latest version has a 'preference setting' allowing 1, 2, or 4 threads.

Sounds like a Mac Pro would be perfect, but I've been scared by reports of slow drives and the advent of dual quads. (Funny how things don't change--I wanted dual quads in a Charger way back in high school. Wonder if Apple will add headers and posi some time soon.)

I'm pretty naive (no, stupid might be closer to the truth) regarding confusers, but I'd like to buy a new one that'll have a 5-6 year useful life.

I guess my question is this:

Assuming:
1-that software will evolve to higher and higher levels of threadability (Is that a word?), and
2-we see a model next week with, say, two 2.33 GHz quad-Xeons,

what configuration advice do discussion members have?

I am thinking of something like:
4 Gb ram
two 2.66GHz dual-Xeons (or the two 2.33 quads)
ATI X1900

PS: Isn't there a performance issue with FSM and software overhead associated with the dual-quads?

Well, enough of this long-winded question. I'd appreciate any input.

I don't yet have a Mac. But I've been working with Poser (in the PC world) for 6 years.

You might want to visit the Content Paradise forums. You may know that Content Paradise is affiliated with eFrontier, the owners of Poser.

You'll find some Mac users over there.

You can also try the Renderosity forums. They have a Poser forum and a Macintosh forum:

I have just bought a Mac Pro Quad core, 3Ghz with 4GB RAM and a 750GB HD. I am hoping this will last me for a LONG time and I believe it will. If I need Hard Drives, they just slot in really easily! Software is going to catch up to the 64 bit Intel Mac very soon. But to be honest, I am using Adobe CS2 on my Mac, and I heard lots of things saying it runs slowly, this is a load of rubbish. It works absolutely fine, it's the best computer I have EVER used, it's quicker than superman. It takes about 5 seconds from when you switch it on to being able to use os x.

I looked inside the Mac, and was worried about the lack of fans (compared to my PC) but goodness me, it stays cooler than my fridge. It truly is a BEAST of a machine!

GET ONE!!

Even the lower end ones will be fantastic I presume. Mac Pro's RULE THE WORLD!

I never doubted that the original poster was getting
a Mac Pro. I would if I had that kind of money.

I am willing to bet that Poser 7 would work just
fine. It's a new Universal Binary version.

Thanks, guys, for the opinions...

Altered_ego, I'm glad you are willing to bet with my five grand! I really do not have 'that kind of money.' We professors are clearly overpaid for what we do ("nothing," essentially--almost as bad as attorneys!), but we still don't make a lot, so I'm trying to be careful.

I've just started to look at the content paradise forums, a little upsetting because there're a lot of Mac-haters out there.

Incidently, if you have not yet sprung for the iMac, here's my two cents...

1) I wouldn't think there would be much performance difference between the iMac running Poser 7 under Windows or OSX. By 'performance' I mean render times, ease of use is another issue.

2) I would be sure to actually see how fast P7 runs/renders before buying one. It could be that the graphics card may be a very seriously limiting factor. Don't know, just guessing.

3) Lastly, another guess (You can tell I'm a prof--love to expound!). The "no expandibility" criticisms of the iMac are pretty much ignorant crap, in my humble opinion. Computers are integrated systems, all the components have to match. If you upgrade an old Apple II with a 2 GHz 6502 (if there were such a thing) it would be no faster, the bus would still be a snail.

Thanks again!

Awhile ago, I posted a message in this forum, asking for feedback from Mac owners who use Poser.

I got a few really good replies. I remain confident that Poser 7 will be just fine on an Intel iMac.

Yes, I do fantasize about buying a Mac Pro. Yes, it's a lot of money.

I'm hoping to have the funds to buy the 24" iMac later this year.

Now that you're over at Content Paradise, you might want to read the thread that I started. You'll find a lot of helpful info.
