It was suggested to me that I create a new iCloud I.D. At the time I was having a host of problems and did not ask why. Can anyone tell me what would be the benefits of this? I have a iMac that was born late 2012.

There are no benefits, but there are many drawbacks. One of the main ones is that your purchases, Music, apps, Books, etc, will forever be tied to the old Apple ID.
If you are experiencing an issue, seek a solution to that specific problem. It might be something related to information in your Apple ID account, such as payment method, but it’s unlikely to be related to the ID itself.
If you already have an icloud account and want to create a new one just for the heck of it, then there are no benefits.
old or new just the same. If you are facing some trouble with your id then its ok to change. But there is a solution to every problem today so dont think you will have to change either.
