Changing lock screen passcode from find my iphone

My ex stole my iPad and knows the lock screen password. Can I change that password remotely?

If you were able to place it in Lost Mode, you know the passcode.

Now that it is in Lost Mode, they will never enable to activate/use it.

Have you also changed the password to your Apple ID to be sure they can't turn off Find My iPad?

Perhaps I'm missing something here, but...

If their ex knows the password for the screen-lock, then putting it in lost mode is presumably just a 2-second inconvenience as it will be locked with the current screen lock code. Additionally, I don't believe it necessarily follows that you would know the screen lock just because you can put it into lost mode.
