Open iTunes when connected option

iPod Touch (Red) 5G

haven't seen this asked..

i recently reworked my library in iTunes to try and fix a bunch of weird things i suddenly started seeing (duplicate entries for the same album, missing songs in other albums, artwork that's suddenly not there when it was before, etc). and i only found all this stuff while trying to fix a syncing problem i've had since i bought this thing (2014). once i thought i had the library fixed up, i shut down iTunes, disconnected the iPod and started again with a brand new sync. well, the sync still didn't work but at least iTunes still started automatically when i plugged in the iPod. not so anymore. i plug it in today - nothing. since i still wanted to fix the syncing problem, i did a hard back to factory reset. after that, the syncing problem seemed to be fixed but my iTunes will still not start automatically. finding a hint online, i went into the summary page/options and noticed the 'Open iTunes when this device is connected' option was disabled (grayed out). not just unchecked, disabled. i couldn't do a thing with it.

anybody have an idea on what could be causing this? corrupt library maybe?

In the past the symptoms you describe might have been fixed by resetting the iTunesPrefs.xml file. iTunes 12.5.1.21 introduced a change with the way preferences are saved. It seems that what used to be stored in:

C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunesPrefs.xml

is now stored in a number of files spread amongst these folders:

C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\Cookies

C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Preferences

C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Preferences\ByHost

(There could be others)

If preferences aren't being saved then try right-clicking the iTunes shortcut and using Run as administrator. Doing this once may resolve things. Otherwise try holding down Ctrl+Shift as you start iTunes to launch it in its own safe mode which again may sometimes help. Otherwise if these three folders don't exist on your system creating them may allow iTunes to save its preferences properly. Alternatively deleting those that you do have may allow them to be recreated with the right permissions so that changes are stored in future.

Type %appdata%<return> in Explorer's address bar to reach the Roaming folder without having to display hidden folders.

i got the Open option back by cutting and pasting the Preferences directory to my C:\ drive (it was recreated in appdata). so that works but unfortunately now i can't get into my library or the store. in other words i can't get to the page that has all those links at the top. somewhere along the line during this mess i did see my .itl file but i don't remember where it was. i don't think it was in the preferences directory that i cut and pasted. any ideas on getting my library back to being viewable?
