Saving and losing photo's on iphoto/icloud...Help!!

I can't find a workable solution to the photo iphone situation. I am now drowning in so many cloud based storage apps/sites/blah blah, just because I can't find a way of saving my photo's from or off the phone. With the iCloud for the PC, are you able to save your photos from your iphone to your windows pc, and then delete them off your phone without losing the lot? (I have over 5000 on my phone, and I'm stuck with no storage, and nowhere to safely put my pics.) I don't want to use dropbox (every time I switch anything on it's downloading frantically forever it seems), but when I connect my phone to my pc by usb, the pc won't export the photos because it says there is nothing to import. But when I try and save them onto my pc, it only looks like it's saving 1/3 of the photo's from the phone..... I'm scared to save them all on my laptop, if I even really knew how to do that, because my husband lost ALL his photos from a 3 week trip to India when he tried to do that.... Aaaargh, sorry, but I am on my last nerve.......

I have an iPhone SE, with not much memory, an HP pro pc, and a Mac Air . ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

Much Love x

Don't forgot to mark as resolved (you can pick any reply as answer). Also Product Feedback - Apple can be used to tell Apple you think iCloud should have a long term storage ability, or something of the sort, but for now it seems to not be in their plans as this is a common question people have.

No method is bulletproof. I'm saying that at the start to get it out of the way, but the best way to make storage on your device is to move the images off them. iCloud is more of a syncing and all-in-one backup tool then it is for long term storage.

To the point you can either manually import images using Import photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support or you can use iCloud Photo Library - Apple Support.

As for iCloud Photo Library the 5000 images may be too large for the default 5GB which is given. Also once you imported the images to iCloud Photo Library turn it off on your iPhone before deleting any images as they would delete from iCloud as well other wise.

If you go with either process and want to have some/even a little reassurance also copy the images from that device to an external drive.

Brillianr thank you, also finally explained what iCloud actually is. Nice one! As for the photo's, I take your advice to back them up externally first. Sensible :) Noted also, the gentle admonishing..., too many photos for any sane person to posssess on one electronic device! How do you store photos and music, for instance,

If you don't mind disclosing your bunker hideouts :)))

Thanks again x
