kernel panics after installing 10.12.6

I installed 10.12.6 last weekend, and shortly thereafter, starting getting several kernel panics a day -- the most recent is attached.

I have attempted the following to identify or fix the issue so far:

  • Removed any 3rd party kernel extensions (I had a VirtualBox and a Seagate kext)
  • Tried reinstalling the OS from Internet Recovery
  • I found a lot of errors in the logs from the iMazing Mini beta I've been running for months, so I disabled it
  • I disabled the Time Machine back to my USB-attached external drive (I still have a second Time Machine destination pointing to a Synology NAS)
  • I've installed OnyX, and run the recommended cleanup and maintenance - this did find some corruption on my boot drive, and recommended that I boot into Recover Mode and run a repair, which I did

No luck -- the panics are still occurring. Anything I can look at!?

Ok, some updates - in order to try booting from a different drive, I grabbed Carbon Copy Cloner, and attempted to clone my bootdrive (the external ssd) to both the internal hdd, and also to the direct attached Seagate drive - both failed with Kernel Panics after copying the same amount of data, and neither were able to pickup where they left off when it restarted, resulting in another panic almost immediately.

So this leads me to believe that there is something wrong with the bootdrive, either hardware, or a corrupt file - could a corrupt file cause this sort of thing?

Additionally, when I got up this morning, the Mac went into a continuous spin of kernel panics, but this time, it listed the panic details on the white restart screen - I managed to grab a picture of it, attached below. Turning the machine off and on again got it up and running.

I'm thinking my next step is a new Sierra install on one of my other drives, to test drive that for a few days. Any other thoughts?

Report included below. One further note -- I have been running for a day or two with the external Seagate disconnected, and am still experiencing Kernel Panics, so that does not appear to be it.

I have unmounted and disconnected my Backup+ drive (Seagate drive) - the ASMT1053 is actually an external SSD that I am using as my boot drive, so I cannot disconnect it to test (probably information I should have included originally -- sorry!). If I continue to have panics, I can clone my boot drive to the Seagate and run from there -- are there any other ways you can suggest to test this?

Try running this program in your normal account, then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy Report” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

Update - I had another panic report that I didn't see, hidden behind open windows from an event overnight, and it looks very different from any other I've seen:

Hi m1corey, sorry to hijack your thread but I am having the same issue with my computer, as in, it is going into KP everyday... but I really know nothing. I am wondering if the reason this is occuring is the same as yours or not? I've never had anyone add hardware etc, still as it was out of the box Mid 2010, i7 4GB Ram... I've erased my HD and completely started again, still happening. Not sure what else to do?? This is mine??

Well it's the same issue. That's why I asked if the issue was happening for the same reason.

In your case, the GPU panic,

panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff7f8cd94705): "GPU Panic: mux-regs 3 3 7f 0 0 0 severity 3 switch-state 0 IG FBs 0 EG FBs 3:0 power-state 0 3D idle HDA busy : \n"@/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/AppleGraphicsControl/AppleGraphicsCon trol-3.14.49/src/AppleMuxControl/kext/GPUPanic.cpp:149

is not the same as

This is why I suggested a separate discussion.

Disk utility tells me the SMART status of the internal drive is 'Verified', and the external SSD (my boot drive) and the Seagate are both 'Not Supported'. I had both external drives connected when I had the last panic, and while running the hardware test.

Would it be possible something _on_ the boot drive to cause this problem, such as a corrupt file? Obviously a corrupt file in a core part of the OS could do crazy things, but I've re-installed the OS using the recovery partition, which would expect to have cleaned anything up there
