Pop-up ads are advertisements that open over or under your browser window, in another tab, or as a graphic element within the current window. To help control pop-ups on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac, make sure your software is up to date.

Like phishing email, some pop-ups pretend to be from Apple or another trusted company to trick you into giving personal information. They might even show you an alert saying there's a problem with your Apple product. If you're concerned about a pop-up, follow these instructions or contact Apple.

Update your software

Always update the software on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, and on your Mac. Some software updates include improvements that help control pop-up ads.

Close pop-up ads on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch has iOS 9.3 or later:

If the pop-up won't close or reappears, you can tap in the Smart Search field and enter a new URL or search term. Or just close the tab: Tap and then tap on that tab.

If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch has an earlier version of iOS:

If you see a Block Alerts button after you dismiss a pop-up multiple times, tap the button to stop showing alerts from that webpage.

If you can't close a pop-up, force Safari to close. To prevent Safari from automatically reopening any windows, go to Settings > Safari, then tap Clear History and Website Data. This also removes your browser history and cookies.

You can also adjust settings in Safari on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to help protect your device.

Close pop-up ads on your Mac

Start by closing any pop-ups that are open on your Mac.

If your Mac is running Safari 9.1:

• Press the Close button on the pop-up.
• If the pop-up reappears or will not close, you can click on the tab or close the entire Safari window.
