Combining tracks into one album

I have the same issue as described here ( Combine your songs into albums in iTunes - Apple Support ). I selected all the tracks that should be part of the same album, clicked Edit --> Get Info --> checked "Album is a compilation of songs by various artists" --> OK. The tracks were then all arranged under one album on iTunes, and I did a resync to my iPhone. The resync did nothing, and I still have multiple albums with the same album name, subdivided by the names of the various artists on my iPhone. Can someone please explain?

iOS devices don't work with the compilation flag. Older devices don't use Album Artist. Set both where appropriate for best results. Use Various Artists for the Album Artist, or the band or artist responsible for releasing the album.

See Grouping tracks into albums for more help if required.
