Were you following the instructions on Apple's site to enable two factor authentication?

If you have a credit card associated with your AppleID and it asked for the CID number, that is just an identification check against the data Apple already has on file with your account.

No don't give details if you want to check / change card details Go to iTunes main page bottom of page apple I'd click that view I'd Go to manage payments check /change your card details.
Go to appleid.com to set up 2 step verification.

While not required to set up 2 Factor Authentication, it is wise to add credit card information.
If you ever need account recovery due to a forgotten password or lost trusted device, not having a credit card number on file will make account recovery more difficult and add to the time taken for this.
