OS 10.6 printer problem

I have a Brother printer I'm unsuccessfully trying to use with a new iMac running OS 10.12.6. After numerous attempts (listed below) to rectify the problem I get the same error dialog via the Printer Proxy:

"Stopped - unable to startup session, result = -10, 1 page"

An online search of the error's wording finds numerous examples of the same error on HP & Epson printers a while ago; most seem to have been resolved after OS 10.xx updates.

I have talked with Apple tech suport who say they have never heard of the error and it must be Brother's fault. Brother's tech support is also unfamiliar with the error but says if the printer can print a test page from the computer (it can) then as far as they're concerned it's Apples fault. The printer works fine from a MacBook Pro running OS 10.11.6.

Any ideas?

Tried so far:

• Downloaded and installed latest Printer Driver (4.5.2) and Firmware update from Brother.

• Deleted existing items from iMac HD > Library > Printers and created new content via System Preferences > Printers.

• Disabled GateKeeper via Terminal and repeated above steps.

Hmm, 'cgpdftops' is a PDF-to-PostScript filter and 'dgpdftoraster' if is a PDF-to-raster filter. I am wondering if there may be a permissions error that may be the culprit. Sierra has "upped the ante" with security with enabling System Integrity Protection (SIP) by default.

A few things you may want to try.

  1. Create a new user account. Log off of your current account, and then, log back in with the new account. Try printing.
  2. Log off of your current account and log into the administrator account (if your current one does not have administrator privileges). Try printing again.
  3. Boot up the iMac in Recovery mode. Access Disk Utility and run the First Aid option ... OR, alternatively, use the Terminal command fsck in Single User mode.

Yes I did (forgot to include that in original post).

After resetting printing system and again adding the Brother Printer to printer list, I attempted to print.

The first few times I get a crash report headed either with

"cgpdftops quit unexpectedly"

or

"cgpdftoraster quit unexpectedly"

Printer Proxy shows same error.

Eventually the crashes seem to stop, same error.

This did something, but still does not solve the problem.

After following the referenced Apple Support page on repairing permissions, when I try to print, the error in Print Proxy reads:

“Stopped - ‘Filter’ failed, 1 page”

I then removed and re-added the Brother Printer in System Preferences > Printers & Scanners. This then returned the original error of:

“Stopped - unable to startup, result = -10, 1 page”

After again repairing permissions, I get back to:

“Stopped - ‘Filter’ failed, 1 page”
