PowerPoint 2008/2011 Freezes Spinning Wheel after Sierra Upgrade

I recently updated a Mac Mini (Mid 2010) to macOS Sierra and now PowerPoint Slideshow that I've had running on it continuously for months freezes regularly. When it freezes, the slideshow will go to the background and the PPT program will be in front; neither is accessible and just shows a spinning wheel. I have to force quit the program and restart it to get PPT to do anything again.

Here is what I've tried so far without success:

  • Rebuilt the slideshow from a previous month's file
  • Roll back to previous month's file
  • Reduce the number of slides
  • Deleted and reinstalled Office 2008
  • Installed Office 2011
  • Deleted Office 2008 so that only Office 2011 is installed <- testing this now
  • Everything here:Microsoft Community
    • New User profile
    • hard disc is named
    • no custom preferences in use
    • can't find autorecovery files <- maybe worth another look?
  • Replaced with Mac Mini Server (Mid 2011) also on macOS Sierra

I'm a little lost here because I've ruled out the file as an issue and I've ruled out the machine as the issue. I suppose macOS Sierra could be the problem, so I'm looking at reformatting and upgrading just short of macOS Sierra. Does anybody have other ideas as to what could be causing this? It was working fine until the upgrade to macOS Sierra, so it could be the OS itself, but that just seems unlikely.

The next step I'm going to try is reformatting and not upgrading to Sierra.

Mac mini, macOS Sierra (10.12.6), 2.4 GHz Core2Duo, 4GB DDR3, HDD

Okay, I've tried this before without success, but I just followed these steps again.

However, before I try using the PowerPoint file again, I got another idea from some friends and have saved the PPT as a .mov and now I'm looping that video. Hoping that will allow it to run perpetually without issue, since now I'm dealing with an entirely different program.

If that works I may mess with PPT one more time, but if I have any more issues and can use the movie method, I'll just go with that.

Thanks very much for the help.

Hello again. I ended up reformatting back to the original OS and upgrading to El Capitan, but not Sierra and had the same issue again. The output from the program is below. Please help! Thanks in advance.

there are great many powerpoint viewers which are free for any operation systems

if you attempt to view the power point file with a number of those and they work then your support case may be with microsoft and if they too have issues attempt to make a very simple one and test with that

at any rate your issue is somewhat mostly with microsoft

Try running this program in your normal account, then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy Report” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

ight be a corrupt .plist.

Do a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.

Quit the application.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.microsoft.Powerpoint.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.

Restart the computer, open the application, and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

If you did not completely remove Office 2008, or Office 2011 for Mac, see this Microsoft article that details the process for either. It is not as simple as drag/drop to the Trash, as files are installed in System areas too. Once you are done with that, reboot, and then reinstall Office 2011 for Mac. Then, apply all updates to Office 2011 through v14.7.6, which was the last update. All Support for Office 2011 for Mac ends Oct. 10, 2017.

Note. Microsoft has not tested Office 2011 for Mac against macOS 10.13 (High Sierra), and warns about upgrading to High Sierra when Office 2011 for Mac is installed. As for Office 2016 for Mac, you must have version 15.35 or later for compatibility with High Sierra.
