Where does GB Store Track Files?

Hey, I want to use a MIDI track created in GB with Pro Tools. I know that GB doesn't support Exporting MIDI tracks, so I'm trying to figure out the folder that GB stores tracks from a specific session, so I can open the MIDI file in PT. All I've ever been able to find is the Session file, not the tracks from a given session.

Thanks,

Adam

Yes, it shows up under the My Loops heading.

I've been starting my search at the HD, so HD/Library/, etc was where I was looking.. How do you get to this same directory structure via the username? When I click the Users folder it shows my icon, but when I click it it's just a list of my personal folders/files.

I've also tried entering the path in "Go to Folder." Nothing.

Thanks.

The Library folder in your user home folder is hidden by default.

To make it visible in Sierra:

  • Quit GarageBand .
  • Select the "Home" folder icon (the little house) in the Finder's sidebar . The Finder window showing your Home folder needs to be the front most Finder window.
  • Then press the key combination ⌘J to open the "View options". Enable "Show Library Folder" in the dialog panel that will appear..

Once the Library folder is visible in your Home folder, navigate to Library/Audio/Apple Loops/User Loops

You are right, you cannot export MIDI Regions directly from GarageBand. Here is one workaround using a little Script "GB2MIDI" that you can download from

http://www.larskobbe.de/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/GB2MIDI.zip

It can extract the MIDI data that is stored in an Apple Loop File (Green Apple Loop) and converts it into a separate MIDI File

Here is the workaround

  • In GarageBand, make an Apple Loop from your MIDI Region (File ➤ Add Region to Loop Library)
  • GarageBand creates an Apple Loop (a special aiff file) and stores it in the following location ~/Library/Audio/Apple Loops/User Loops
  • Drag the Apple Loop over the Scrip Droplet (GB2MIDI)
  • It creates a MIDI File that you can now import into Pro Tool

There's a "show apple loops," in the View tab that lists every loop, including the three I saved... So GB's def saving the MIDI ...but where??! Thanks,

The Loops you created in GarageBand are saved as Apple Loopa to your drive in the folder ~/Library/Audio/Apple Loops/User Loops

In GarageBand, you can see those Apple Loop that you created when you select "My Loops" at the top of the Loop Browser, clicking on the Loops Packs Selector top open the Loop Packs Menu.

There's no checkbox in my info window for unhiding the library folder. Did some research and figured it out....the old Option button hold when the Go menu's dropped down.

It will only show, if you are viewing your Home folder in the Finder; if the focus switches to any other Finder window, the option is missing. And did you really open the View options, and not the Info panel?

Enter ⌘J , not ⌘I.
