Target Display Mode options for iMac 2017

Hi Everyone,

I should have checked before - but I didn't... . On my old iMac 2012 I was able to hook-up my work laptop via Thunderbolt, press Command+F2 and voila - my iMac turned into a computer for work. Press Command+F2 and I was back in home mode. It's ingenious.

The new iMac doesn't come with Target Display mode and based on what I read it's unlikely that it will come back due to the 5k resolution requirements. So it's a hardware not a software issue.

I chatted with support and they suggested to get around this with Apple TV. Has anyone tried that? Besides Apple TV any other ideas on how to emulate Target Display Mode?

Thanks for any help!

Hello 60wpm,

one month ago I bought a 27” iMac 2017, and now Im considering using it as a big screen for other computers to avoid multiple screens in my office, like I did with my old 2011 iMac. But everywhere on internet it’s stated that Apple confirmed TARGET MODE is not supported any longer on iMac 2017.

Can you tel me how you did or which connector you plugged to use your new iMac 2017 as a screen for other macs ? Thanks a lot for any help.

Yes, I am using my older iMac (Late 2013) as the Target screen for Target Display Mode.

I connected my newer iMac (Late 2017) from it's Thunderbolt 3 out to my older iMac Thunderbolt 2 (using an adapter that Apple sells).

This worked out as I hoped. I just press Cmd+F2 on the older iMac's keyboard and it goes into Target Display Mode.

This is everyday usage.

I can also go into Target Disk Mode, which I do now and then. Get into that mode by, on the older iMac, going to System Preferences > StartUp Disk and a button/tab there allows selecting the computer to be the target in Target Disk Mode.

Everything you need is located in Use your iMac as a display with Target Display Mode - Apple Support including which iMacs work and what cabling is required.

I have used AppleTV before and yes it works fine but remember you TV is a TV and not a computer display so you may not like the resolution on the TV. This feature is called Airplay. You also may connect the computer directly to the TV, please review OS X El Capitan: Use your TV as a display
