Return key in Messages on Mac?

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to hit the return/enter key without sending a message in the Messages application on a MacBook Pro (MacOS Sierra 10.12.6)? I sometimes would like to separate message content using the return/enter key, without sending the message (like on iPhone or iPad), but have not been able to discover a way to do this...

Hi Erejota!

I understand that you'd like to insert a line break in your Mac Messages app, and I'm happy to help. You can hold down the Control key while pressing the Return key to enter a line break in the Messages app.

Thanks, Joe_7399. That did the trick! BTW, is that feature documented somewhere? I didn't see it in the Help sections I looked at...
