g drive as 'not mounted'

I am in disk utility seeing that my G drive is 'not mounted'. I am unable to see it on the desktop, finder or sidebar. I ran first aid and it failed (check exit code 8). I have not traveled or upgraded anything in my systems so it seems unwarranted and sudden.

The G drive is in grey and signifying that it has none of my data on it. what are my options and last resorts?

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), external hard drive

Option a: Select the greyed out drive in disk utility and then click the 'Mount' button.

Option b: Unplug the drive then plug it back in again.
