No "tap to download" for pictures in text messages

When I first got my iphone if someone sent me a picture in a text message I would get this little box that said "tap to download", and a simple tap - as long as the cellular was on - would bring the picture in. For some inexplicable reason my phone has stopped doing this. When someone sends me a picture I get no notification at all. No "tap to download" box. Nothing. So I have no way to tell if someone sends me a picture. How do I get the "tap to download" box back?

If I leave my cellular on photo texts will come through, but it eats up my data pretty fast.

iPhone SE, iOS 10.3.3

Hi Plepshruk,

Text messages containing pictures use a multimedia messaging service (MMS). MMS requires a cellular connection. You must have cellular turned on to receive text messages containing pictures.

When you receive text messages containing pictures, can you download these pictures?

I can recive photos just fine, I just don't get any notification that there are photos if my cellular is off. Used to be if my cellular was off instead of the picture I would get a message that said "tap to download". Now I don't get that message so if I don't happen to have my cellular on I have no way to know if someone has sent me a pi

Okay Plepshurk, I understand.

It sounds like you have a device from which you're sending pictures to your iPhone using MMS, and when your iPhone's cellular is turned off you don't receive Tap To Download notifications about these MMS messages, is that correct? If that's the case, when you turn your cellular data on, does your iPhone then receive the MMS messages?

Plepshurk,

I'll let you know if I find a solution...

In the mean time it might be worth resetting your network settings (Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings--this resets Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings that you’ve used before).

Also try signing out of the Apple ID associated to Messages (Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > Apple ID > Sign out) and then signing back in.

Yes, if the cellular is on the pictures come in fine. I just don't get the "tap to download" message anymore when my cellular is off

Is the iPhone you're trying to receive MMS messages on connected to a wi-fi network while the cellular is turned off?

It doesn't seem to matter either way. I get the same results wether it's connected to wi-fi or not.

The problem isn't that the photos don't come in, it's that I don't get the notice that they do.
