Unlock with Apple Watch requires your password when Mac Restarts

I have a 2013 MackBook Pro with Retina display running macOS Sierra 10.12.16. After a recent wipe and fresh install (I like to do this every now and then) I have been getting the message 'Unlock with Apple Watch requires your password when Mac restarts' when my Mac starts up (see photo).User uploaded file

This happens on startup. I also have an 2013 27" iMac that also unlocks with my Apple Watch (Series 2 Nike) and this message does not come up on start up.

Has any one had a similar experience and been able to disable this message on startup?

Hi shanefromspringfield lakes!

I understand that you're being prompted to enter your password on your Mac when using Unlock with Apple Watch, and I'm happy to help. This is expected behavior, as you'll see in this excerpt from our support article:

The first time you log in after you turn on, restart, or log out of your Mac, log in by entering your password manually. After that, Apple Watch logs in for you.

Hi alex_h1,

Totally understand this, however, when first turn on my MacBook Pro, this message comes up. I also have a 27" iMac and the first time I turn this on (after it being off) I only get prompted for the password, then if the screen locks after this, it will unlock with my Apple Watch.

My MacBook is the only computer that shows this message when it is powered on after being off for however long. Is this a message that you get when you first turn on your Mac's?

Regards
