Mail App not responding on launch

The Mail App (v. 10.2) that comes with the macOS, gets blocked and isn't responding when opening it (the windows still open though). There seems to be no way to reset it, since it is part of the macOS it is protected and can't be deleted and reinstalled. Any idea about how to fix this without having to reset the entire OS?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013), macOS Sierra (10.12.3), Mail 10.2

See if this works in your account.


Do a backup, preferably 2 on 2 separate drives.


Quit Mail.


Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail. Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.


Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.


If that doesn’t solve it repeat the above using Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent.

Try logging back into your original account. Go to System Preferences > Internet Accounts. Remove your email accounts. If you have more than one, remove them one-at-a-time, start the Mail app and see if it crashes. Stop removing them if the crashes stop.


Once the crashes do stop, try adding your email accounts back one-at-a-time or until the crashes resume. If this does occur then you will find the account that is the culprit.

Take back of all mails in V4folder : Method for how to copy in V4 folder .

Click on Go on top menu bar , hold option key click on > library > select mail folder > right click on mail there itself > click on copy mail > right click on extreme right hand side in column B , that is below persistence info.plist > click on paste item .

Entire mails are copied to V4 folder .


Go to the corrupted IMAP account , select it & click on minus sign it is deleted .


Configure new IMAP account , go to top menu bar ,file > import mail boxes > import data from > select apple mail > click on continue > select the back drop folder then choose new .


When new IMAP account is opened , a new folder with all mails will appear in the mail side bar .You can rename the folder .
