There is no default application selected to open the document

Lately, I have been getting the following message when trying to install any programs with the suffix ".pkg":

"There is no default application selected to open the document"

I tried using Stuffit Expander only to find that it definitely is not the program that is sought. Does anyone know how I can fix this? I am trying to install my Logitech trackball software and this is driving me nuts!

G3 iMac & a 4G 60gb iPod, Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Hi ArtWench,

select any .pkg-file and type Apple-i to get the information window. There you can see a pop-up menu called "Open with". Select "Other...", then navigate to /Applications/Utilities/Installer.app. Select "Installer.app" and click "Apply to all".

Aha! Now we are getting somewhere! It would appear that somehow my installer.app has disappeared. You got me as to how that happened. Sigh! Anyway, do I have to totally reinstall my system in order to get the installer.app or can I find it on the Tools Disk or download somewhere?

ArtWench,

no, you can reinstall it from the install disk (or if available from the latest Combo update). Use Pacifist to extract and install it.

I tried doing this and after I selected the Installer application this message came up: Pacifist was unable to open the file Installer.app. Please make sure this is a file type that Pacifist understands.

Something very vital in downloading must be missing from my computer and I have no idea what it is. Any help?
