Update OS yesterday to version 10.11.6, now my MacBook fan runs constantly and is hot to touch, iMessage lag as well, often getting the rainbow swirling ball. I did not back up my computer (like an idiot) before the update to do a simple restore to the previous version.

Try a SMC reset. The article covers when this is required, but doing this will not affect anything.
