Hi I have a Airport Extreme Base Station connected to the internet via Cable modem. I have an AE connected to my stereo. When I do a reset my home network and the AE show up in my airport. I can surf if I'm connected the the Base Station and I can play music through the stereo if I switch to the AE. My problem is when I try to get the AE to join my existing network after the set up using airport assistant it disappears. I have tried everything soft reset hard reset and same results I'm at a loss as to how to get it to connect to my network. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
PowerBook 17 1.5Ghz,
Mac OS X (10.4.8),
1 GB DDR SDRAM
Is your intent to use the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) to extend the wireless network from the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) and/or just for streaming iTunes/sharing a USB printer?
Thannk you for your response. My intent is just to stream music though I have tried to do both just to see if they will work. Same thing either way. I can only see the AE if it is seperate from my network. I had this working before after I bought the AE but am at a loss as to why it won't work now.
To set up the AX for just streaming iTunes...
To set up AirTunes on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, use the AirPort Admin Utility to check these settings:
AirPort tab - Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
- Wireless Mode: Join an Existing Wireless Network (Wireless Client)
- Wireless Network: <select the existing AEBS wireless network>
Music tab - Enable AirTunes on this base station (checked)
- Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port (optional)
- iTunes Speaker Name: <whatever you wish>
- iTunes Speaker Password (optional)
In iTunes:
iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General - Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)
I tried that. How do I see the AE via ethernet from the admin utility? I can see it via airport after a reset but I can't get it to show up via ethernet. I must be missing something. I followed your steps when I saw it via airport but again I got the ok message and then no AE.
Ok. I hooked the ethernet cable directly to the Airport Express and the only way it would show up in the Airport admin utility was after a soft or hard restart. Having done that I set it up exactly as you mentioned above with the same results. It disappears. iTunes can't see it unless it is standing alone and I connect to it via airport but I can't use the Base Station I have connected to the internet if I do that. I'm at a loss as to why it won't join my base station.
Just a note. the problem ended up being the way the Airport Express was placed. It needed to be vertical not horizontal even though they are only a few meters apart. As soon as I put it vertical it connected to my network no problem.
