Can I play a Blu-ray movie on a Mac with a Blu-ray player for the TV?

Can I play a blu-ray movie on my iMac from 2010 with a Blu-ray player for the TV? I eventually want to copy (compress) the movie to a file that I would set on plex media server. Would that be possible or should I have to buy a special Blu-ray player for the Mac.
