What is MacScan and how did it end up on my computer? I use malwarebytes to scan my Mac.

I have a macbook pro with macOS Sierra 10.12.6. I was on launchpad to open Malwarebytes when I noticed that I have MacScan on my computer. I don't remember downloading it and it won't let me dump it. I searched it on finder and it has a manual and all the stuff. Could it have come with my new i-phone 6S?

MacBook, iOS 5.1.1

Hi i understand how important it is for you to know about the MacScan.

MacScan is an third party developed application which is officially not recommended by Apple Inc or any of its support communities.

Apple Mac operating system is designed in such a way that it doesn't allow any third party application to affect any part

of the data.

As per your question raised let me try to put my answer in a very simplest way so that u would be comfortable to understand.

Ex:when you try to surf/browse/search something in a browser u can see pop ups.ads, banners poping up on your screen

during the search if you are anyone by chance click on any of those pop ups apps are unwanted files start downloading

without the knowledge of the user.

Let me also remind you as u might also know about this google itself allows popups wherein the company's/corporate's pay google for it.

hence you can do an alternate as you have malwarebyte scanner which is not recommended by Apple Inc but the way it works makes things easier searching cached, cookies files manually it is a bit confusing for an user point of view.

Hence use the malware byte scanner to scan things and remove the unwanted files ex:Junk files.

from the device.

Hope this answers your question.

Regards

A general note for those interested. Thomas Reed states this for removing MalwareBytes for Mac.

1. For version 2 or older, there's an uninstall option under the Help menu

2. For the current version 3, you have to use the separate uninstaller app in the .dmg file downloaded from the MalwareBytes site. He says they're working on returning the uninstall option in the Help menu, but it's not ready yet.

Thank you for replying. I removed MacScan by opening it in my finder and dumped all the parts in the trash and then dumped the trash. I don't know anything aboutEtreCheck. I was assisted to download and use Malwarebytes by an Apple tech the last time my computer froze with a message about it being hacked and to call a number for assistance. I called apple instead since that sounded like a scam to me. He had me scan with Malwarebytes and then go into the library and dump my cache, cookies and saved application state folders. I do this fairly often now.
