OS X language change disable caps lock function

Hi,

I am running macOS Sierra 10.12.6 on a 2015 MacBook Pro, and I have this annoying "bug" ever since Sierra launched as far as I remember.

I use 2 languages to type, Greek and English, and I use both of them equally. I switch between them using Space. Due to my kind of work I have to use caps lock often to write uppercase in both languages. After the Sierra release when I switch language the caps lock button automatically turns off (the light and the function). Is this intended or is it something I am missing?

I know there is an option to switch languages using the Caps Lock, and hold down Caps Lock for a few seconds to write uppercase (and that would probably solve the problem) but that would slow my typing down.

Thank you in advance,

Ilias.

Yes, that is normal behavior for MacOS 10.11/12/13. You can ask Apple to change it for 10.14 via

I am curious what sort of texts you need to frequently write which require strings of uppercase greek and english next to each other. It would be helpful to provide that to Apple in your feedback so they understand the "use case" for which current behavior is a problem.

This is standard behavior in 10.11, 10.12, & 10.13. There isn't any way to change it, unless you want to go back to some older system. You can tell Apple you want it changed via

I am curious: What kind of writing is it that you produce that requires typing lots of all caps English followed by lots of all caps Greek?

I don't think that can be the explanation. All keyboards in Europe, Africa, Middle East follow the ISO standard, which has an extra key next to the z and a vertical return key. Keyboards in the US and Asia (except Japan) follow the ANSI standard with no key next to z and a horizontal return key. My keyboard is the US type and does not maintain caps lock active starting with 10.11. It is the MacOS version and not the hardware keyboard which determines the behavior.

Like I said, I was just curious, I have never run into text on the web or elsewhere for which this feature would be useful. If you have an example url, I'd be interested. And putting it in your feedback would help convince Apple to add this feature back.

Hello again,

I did set up a new user account and the only thing I changed was go to shortcuts, disable Spotlight shortcuts and active Input Sources shortcuts. I did this because they share the same shortcut combination, thats the default setting, and I am getting the same result.. Every time I have caps lock activated and working, if I switch languages it automatically switches off the caps lock light and its function..

Well if thats the case its a shame. The key reads "Caps Lock" and not "Caps Occasionally" for a reason. What is the idea of disabling caps lock every time you switch languages, I don't get it.. Anyway thank you for your response and lets hope Apple will solve this because its an everyday problem, it worked fine for decades on Windows and earlier Mac Os..

Apple will never do it.They ask on creating apple id the first letter of the password to be on "caps lock".Do you estimate how many millions id's will "preventively" lock just because users will "float"in between two (2) languages ?

Limitation is the key to maintain, and control, and Cupertino knows that.

So now i cannot keep my GREEK "caps locked" without continiously pressing the "swift".

As for bottom line,we need to understand that what is useful for me,perhaps is not for you,but still we both request for same.

Hi Ilias

I am running macOS High Sierra 10.13.3 (17D102) on a mid 2017 MacBook Pro, and I have the same "issue".

I am on "Caps Lock" in English and when i try to change Language into Greek from English then in order to write in Capital Letters in Greek i keep one finger always pushing the "swift".

Please if there is someone to know the "how to" let us know.

PS: I am not willing to create any "new user" on my MBP in order to have a solution bearing in mind that it IS NOT a solution.

Best Regards.

Makis.

Dear Tom

The kind of writing is not the issue...The kind of "paying" demands my device to maintain its upper or lowers the way i want and also in any language i want.

Of course not to mention that in case we want to scream in Greece we do use "all caps" as you mentioned above.

There is only one explanation.

The devices coming to Greece "mac os" do Have a keyboard that the "return key"is upside down L.

The keyboards that have the abillity to maintain caps lock active in all languages have the return key as horizontal and next to L : "

The answer is there and i hope i am wrong.
