No sound and red light in headphone jack

How do i fix the sound on my macbook pro? i have no sound from internal speakers and the internal speakers do not appear as an output option in system preferences. Also, the headphone jack has a red light in it. I have tried re-inserting headphones in the jack and taking out. The sound does not work with headphones either.

The red LED light is the Digital signal, being shown because your port is stuck in digital mode.

The physical plug and jack is primitive, and it sometimes takes inserting and wiggling a handful to a dozen times to set it straight.
