Can't Install Java 8 Update 144

I've been trying to install Java on my laptop for a while, but the install helper barely gets started when it crashes, and I never get a notice or a reason why.

Has anyone else experienced this, and is there a way to fix it?

Thanks in advance.

This won't help you, but maybe it will make you feel better.

The dialog to install Java 8 Update 144 popped up on my mac, and the installation ran without any problem on Sierra. However, after I installed it, then I discovered that none of the browsers on my mac wanted to run it. These are the messages they displayed:

  • The Chrome browser does not support NPAPI plug-ins and therefore will not run all Java content. Switch to a different browser (Internet Explorer or Safari on Mac) to run the Java plug-in.
  • Starting with Firefox Version 52 (released in March 2017), Firefox has limited support for plug-ins, and therefore will not run Java.

On Safari, I was able to verify the Java installation, but Safari also gave these messages:

  • You already have Java installed. To improve security and save energy, Safari did not activate Java after it was installed. When you visit a website that needs Java, you can turn it on in Safari Security preferences.
  • macOS Sierra 10.12 users: A few issues have been reported on Sierra. See FAQ for more information.

After seeing these messages, now I am thinking I should remove Java, except I don't know how...

Good luck,
