Where are text messages saved and how can you retrieve them?

Where are text messages saved and how can you retrieve them? Although the settings on my iPhone under messages is set to "save forever", my older text messages have dissapeared. It is only saving messages for 1 year instead of "forever". I looked in iCloud.com, but messages aren't listed among the other apps, i.e., contacts, calendar, photos, etc. So where are they saved so I can retrieve them?

iPod nano, iOS 10.3.1

Messages are not saved in iCloud for you to retrieve them. You cannot access them that way. They are part of the backup you do of the phone, and to access them, you need to restore a backup of the phone that had the messages in it. Not sure why you may not be seeing messages older than one year, but then, I don't save messages that long. I know that if you are concerned with saving a message, there are 3rd party apps that can be used to save messages from the phone onto the computer.
