Wrong Icon Appears & Copy/Pastes Different Icon

Kind of a strange problem.

I've had my Blackbook for a couple of months, and all of a sudden today I noticed that a file I created using TextEdit had changed its icon to that of the application PhotoBooth. "Weird" think I, so I attempt to change it back by opening a text file somewhere else on my computer and copying its icon in 'Get Info' and then pasting it into the 'Get Info' of the text file with the weird PhotoBooth icon - except it pastes the wrong icon. Now I have the little house icon that is the same as the user. ***? There doesn't seem to be a way to revert back to the original icon, and now every subsequent text file I create has the little house icon.

I'm wondering if maybe the graphic set for the icons has been corrupted or messed up. How can I get them back to normal? Anyone else experienced this problem?

Have you tried deleting the image while in "Get Info?" This has always reverted the image to the original default icon image for me.

Yes, it's been around for a long time I'm afraid - it was present in 10.3 too (I can't remember 10.2 that well now...). As Francine says, a restart usually clears things up, but the problem will creep back. It's something I hope every update will fix - maybe in 10.5?

More serious is when the file actually opens in the wrong app (following the wrong icon) - I had that occur some months ago, and I had to correct the "open with" setting for every affected file manually via GetInfo. Restarting didn't help in that scenario.

I think it was Jag (10.2.x) that had the bizarre problem where if you had a Finder window open in icon view to a folder with graphics files in it, and worked on one and saved it, then the custom icon would be applied to the file next to the one you just saved, and working on another file would result in yet another one receiving that same incorrect first icon, dragging a new file in would do the same, and so on. You could end up with an entire folder full of files with the same incorrect custom icon.
