"and left it in rice for about a day and a half"
You are writing as if "rice" was a well established proven method of rescuing devices dropped in water. In reality this is a internet myth which has absolutely zero grounds in facts. In the contrary one can describe what happens if the device is left in rice:
- the rice nicely cleans the outside of the device from water (though a towel would be quicker)
- water from inside slowly evaporates (it takes several days or even weeks in case of water tight-devices)
- during first few hours short minerals in water cause electrolysis which take apart components inside the device (look at that in microscope - they will change color from silver to green). Thing is that even if device is switched off, some circuits are still powered, and those will be hit first. If you turn the device before it dries (as you did) the electrolysis will continue in other areas.
What to do in case of water damage (now its too late, but in case someone will find this useful):
- after the damage (say first 30 minutes) the battery has to be completely switched off from the battery connector (preferably at service provider)
- in case of Apple Authorized serivice you are out of warranty, so you can either buy a new phone, or use the discount you get from apple. In any case you will lose your data.
- if you want to save your data and perhaps not to buy a new phone, you have old phone cleaned (in ultrasonic cleaner or at the very least in isopropanol alcohol you can buy for $3).
What you should NOT to is to let the phone corrode for a few days in rice.
Putting device to rice is the modern equivalent of curing disease by shamanism.
