iMac Late 2012 21.5 inch - problem!

Hi everyone,

Looking for some advice. I've been the proud owner of a lovely Late 2012 iMac 21.5 inch for five years now, however it's now developed some major problems. Here are my machine specs:

Processor: 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory: 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
1TB SATA Disk
NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M 512 MB

macOS Sierra Version 10.12.6

Basically I had a massive scare with it last year when out of the blue, my machine wouldn't boot past the Apple logo screen. I managed to fix the problem (or so I thought) by going into recovery mode, loading the OS onto my external hard drive so I could recover all of my files from the SATA Disk, wiping the SATA disk and reinstalling the OS onto the iMac's original drive, so I could load my computer off that again.

However this turns out to be a temporary solution, as I keep having this same problem where the iMac will decide not to boot. I've been using my iMac relatively fine throughout this last week (boot up is fine, if a little slow), but today it wouldn't load past the Apple logo screen. Either the loading bar would fill up completely but nothing would happen, or the loading bar would load about half way or so and then the iMac would just switch itself off. Again, I've had to go into recovery mode, load OS onto my external drive just so I can access the machine again.

Has anyone experienced this problem before? The only thing I can think of is that it might be a hardware problem and not a software problem, since the computer does work fine once I've reloaded the OS, but after a while it'll just cave in again and stop working.

Many thanks!

Sophie

Have you run Apple Hardware Test and what does it report?

How to use Apple Hardware Test on your Mac - Apple Support

If hardware test reports OK, then download and run EtreCheck, created by one of own helpers here in ASC. It is a diagnostic tool that's very useful to us in finding problems. Also it will give us further specs on your Mac. After it runs post the log file here. It will contain no personal information.

Hiya,

Apple Hardware Test doesn't seem to be working properly. It'll run normally for a few minutes but won't finish and seems to get stuck near the end of it. The mouse goes very jerky and I've tried it a couple of times but same problem each time.

EtreCheck is working and here's the result from it:

EtreCheck version: 3.4.4 (448)

Download EtreCheck from https://etrecheck.com

Runtime: 1:44

Performance: Excellent

From what is there, the report looks OK. But there a sections missing. Do you have any User Login Items, Internet Plug-Ins, Safari Extensions? There seems to be nothing listed for these.

The fact that AHT does not complete is troublesome, it may indicate hardware problems. I see you are not using Time Machine. Make a good backup now with either Time Machine or a a cloning software like SuperDuper! or CarbonCopy Cloner.

I'd suggest making a Genius Bar appointment. They have more sensitive hardware tests they can run.
