IMac G3 Won't Boot Up

So I Have A Tray-Loading Rev. B IMac G3 That Won't Boot. I Replaced The Battery And Tried Reinstalling Mac OS 9.2.1 A Couple Of Times. I Still Have The Original Hard Drive Installed But It Seems To Work Fine. Mac OS 9.2.2 Was Installed On This Computer And It Worked Fine But Last Summer I Tried Installing Linux PPC 2000 And It Didn't Boot So I Tried Reinstalling Mac OS 9.2. Now It Doesn't Work

OK, so the computer appears to boot from a CD but not from the built-in hard drive, is that correct? If so, has it been possible to, somehow, carry out a hard disk test/verification when starting up from a CD? Or does not anything work right now?

I assume that the battery was replaced recently. Have you tried a PRAM reset? Any further information about sounds or lights (power button colours)?

For a Linux distribution test, I suppose that the hard disk had been (re)partioned. Could that be part of the problem now? Have you since tried to reformat/reinitialise the hard drive to Mac OS Standard or Mac OS Extended only, using an appropriate version of the Drive Setup utility? Do you have access to an original Mac OS (8.5.x) system CD for this computer? If using a later system CD, it should be a retail version (not a machine-specific version for another Mac).

Please note that a reformatting/reinitialisation will erase everything on the hard disk, so make sure that you have backup copies of any important files before trying this.

This may or may not lead to a change:

Start up from a CD. When at the Desktop, can a hard disk icon be seen (below the CD icon)? If yes, double-click on the hard disk icon. In the open hard disk window, double-click on the System Folder. Locate the Control Panels folder in the open window. Double-click on the Control Panels folder. Open the Startup Disk control panel. Check that the appropriate icon has been selected (highlighted). Close all windows. Restart the computer.

If no change, you may want to try the "Re-bless the System Folder" procedure on page 16 in the Emergency Handbook (link above).
