messages are showing up as numbers and not names

When I receive text messages from some of my contacts, they show up as their phone number and aren't being translated into their name? If I try to compose a new message those same people do not show up as a contact? However, those people when I go into outlook are in my contacts?

Hello PaddleDaddle,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding that some of your contacts appear as phone numbers in Messages on your iPhone. I'm happy to help.

First, go to Settings > Contacts > Choose your Outlook account > toggle Contacts off and on again. This can resolve issues with Outlook properly syncing with your iPhone.

If the issue persists. Restart your iPhone. Restarting can resolve many unexpected behaviors.
Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Let us know if the behavior continues. Include any additional troubleshooting steps you may have tried.

Have a wonderful day!

Thank you for trying to help Jameson.h, I tried rebooting the phone and toggled the contacts on/off, but I still have the issue.

I have two email accounts (and therefore contacts) on my phone - one is Hotmail.com and the other Exchange. I keep almost all of my contact in Exchange (not Hotmail).

For a contact that is showing up in my messages as a number vs. name/text, when I click on the information icon (circle with an I in the middle) its like the contact does not exist. But when I got into my exchange / outlook client I can browse to the contact, so I know the contact is there.

For the same contact, if I go into messaging and hit the "new message" icon, I can browse to the contact just fine as well, however if I go into a message that person has sent me (again I click on a phone #, not a name/text), I go to "add to Existing Contact", the contact doesn't exist (although it existed if I hit "new message").

I have added/deleted both of my email accounts (thinking the "contacts" db was corrupt and needed to be reset), again, no luck.

Thanks for helping!
