Multiple errors, common problem

Hello

I have a mid 2010 iMac, running OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 with 16GB RAM, 1TB HDD

I have 4 symptoms that now seem to arise together from time to time. Timeline may be connected to the latest security update in July.

i) Google Chrome crashes out on startup by failing to load extensions and showing broken tabs, or new tabs fail.

Unistalling and reinstalling latest version of Chrome (even Chrome Canary made no difference)

ii) terminal fails to load showing [forkpty: Resource temporarily unavailable] [Could not create a new process and open a pseudo-tty.])

iii) dmg's cannot install, with system declaring "No such file or directory".

iv) About this Mac pane loads empty or populates very slowly.

Symptoms usually disappear with restart, and then return intermittently.

Scans by Avira, Malwarebytes and Sophos do not show any malware.

System disk and permissions do not show anything significant. Internet searches imply the problems appear in more recent OS X releases too.

Any ideas, what to check next.

Thanks

Resolution!

Having uninstalled the remaining (unused tunnelling and VPN utilities), plus a little more clearing out of start up processes, my system has remained stable for the past 2 weeks.

Thanks for pointing me to EtreCheck and all the advice.

And yes, the VPN service is to enable me to access servers outside of my European homebase.

Possible Fixes for Lion to Yosemite Installations

You should try each, one at a time, then test to see if the problem is fixed before going on to the next.

Be sure to backup your files before proceeding if possible.

  1. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
  2. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
  3. Start the computer in Safe Mode, then restart normally. This is slower than a standard startup.
  4. Repair the disk by booting the from the Recovery HD. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears. Choose Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the side list. In the Disk Utility status area, you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (S.M.A.R.T status is not reported for external drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select the indented (usually, Macintosh HD) volume from the list. Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. When it finishes then click on the Repair Permissions button. When that has completed quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
  5. Create a New User Account Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and enter your Admin password when prompted. On the left under Current User click on the Add [+] button below Login Options. Setup a new Admin user account. Upon completion log out of your current account then log into the new account. If your problems cease, then consider switching to the new account and transferring your files to it - Transferring files from one User Account to another.
  6. Reinstall OS X by booting from the Recovery HD using the Command and R keys. When the Utility Menu appears select Reinstall OS X then click on the Continue button.
  7. Erase and Install OS X Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the CommandandRkeys until the Apple logo appears. When the Utility Menu appears:
  1. Select Disk Utility from the Utility Menu and click on Continue button.
  2. When Disk Utility loads select the drive (out-dented entry) from the Device list.
  3. Click on the Partition tab in Disk Utility's main window toolbar.
  4. Set the number of partitions to one (1) from the Partition Scheme dropdown menu.
  5. Set the Format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
  6. Click on the Apply button.
  7. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu
  8. Select Restart from the Apple Menu.

I followed your (and others advice) running Etrecheck, removing some apps, changing a few settings. The symptoms as originally described still exist. I am including a post-Chrome tab crash Etrecheck log, and a log after restart.

Thanks for your opinions ...

Thanks KiltedTim, it may come to that but in the meantime I've also been studying CPU processes on the Activity Monitor and uncovered 100's of nginx instances. Not sure how that came to be.. have never had this machine as a web server apart from some practice runs with WordPress & Joomla installs.

I'd very much like to disable the server/processes but am not very competent Unix user, if someone can point me at a way to do this, I would be grateful.

Aug 26, 2017 11:41 PM in response to KiltedTim

Have switched mode of connection and providers a number of times (including contracts within a provider), now subscribed solely with NordVPN. Where my previous VPN providers connections were flaky, I have tried to use other routes to get more consistent service levels.

This was quite some time before my current symptoms started to show. Are there any apps you would suggest removing?

Aug 31, 2017 3:07 AM in response to Eric Root

An update from me.

Even after loading up most of the Google extensions, but omitting the Blackberry apps which were causing multiple nginx processes the system has been running extremely stable with no app crashes encountered.

For operational purposes it seems the problem has gone away, except the current report generated by EtreCheck (see below) implies there are now other issues to do with memory.

The possibility of memory issues is suggested on a number of blogs, which claim that the computer might lacks enough memory. However, at the time of uploading this comment, my system confirms around 12GB/16 free.

What else might cause my launch daemons and agents to die?
