Read Receipts turn on after set to off

IPhone 7 10.3.3. I have set read receipts to off for contacts. They turn back on. How is this happening?

What does this mean exactly? I am especially puzzled by your saying "for contacts."

In particular, the only read receipts the iPhone uses is iMessage receipts. You may change those at Settings > Messages > Send Read Receipts. But they apply to all iMessage users - there is no way to isolate this setting to specific contacts. Nor may you send or receive email receipts or SMS text message receipts.

thanks for the reply. Yes you can set read receipts by contact. In the contact thread select the i. Set the read receipt to off or on by the user. Now as to my issue after some unknown period or action the read receipt turns itself back on weeks or some period later. It may be that the update function causes this action. However it should not.
