What is minimum amp required to charge iPhone 7 plus

My Car has a USB port in the Arm Rest. It provides 5w and 500mA. When I plug in my iPhone 7 plus it gives me the sound you get when plugged into the provided Apple 5w 1000mA wall charger BUT there is no indication of charging with the lightening bolt near the battery, and after 1/2 hour the battery has clearly drained slightly. Is the 500mA provided by the car USB port simply insufficient to charge the phone? Thanks

It you try streaming music or talking on phone while using the 5w 500mA charger the phone will lose power. Over time, unused, the phone does not charge adequately at all. I have tried three different Apple certified cables and get the same result each time. I searched all over to see if Apple set/published any minimum charging requirements and have found none.
