login successful with apple id thru PC. Cannot initiate the account as an email client on ipad. I tried to start mail on my ipad with apple id account and it asked me to set up icloud email address. after doing this, i received the message: "problem turning on mail" and the icloud email would not save.

Try signing out of, and then, back in to your Apple ID on your iPad.

  • Settings > Email > Accounts > iCloud > Sign Out
  • Power-down the iPad, and then, power it back up.
  • Then try adding your iCloud account back.

second problem, and perhaps related : when i try to send an email with the native email app on the ipad, it sounds like it sends successfully but then it ends up in outbox. I only have one email client (outlook) set up since the icloud acct will not initiate

Possibly, but this would indicate that there may be an issue with your Outlook email account settings on the iPad. It it not directly related to your iCloud account. You don't need an iCloud account to use the Mail app. Any functional email account should work.

"mail app" resident on the ipad, does not give me an opportunity to sign in. the only sign was when adding the outlook acct and that app works fine.

Is the resident mail app supposed to use the outlook outlook acct I setup as the only email acct ? they do not seem to be "linked"

This is a little tricky because the settings vary depending on the account type. For my gmail account, I select the account, then select it again, and that opens the account settings. There is an SMTP entry there, and when I open it, I can select the server and enter the password, etc. Note that it's not in the Advanced settings.

#2) mail is the resident app on the ipad ; not outlook. Outlook client works fine

The Apple Mail app is the resident app, but it can be configured to use a multitude of email accounts. The "native" Mail app email account would be iCloud.

All email accounts would be added and configured using Settings > Mail > Accounts

Before you send an email, you can choose which email account it is sending from by selecting it in the From: box.

Again, to know which email accounts are currently set up with the Mail app, tap on Settings > Mail > Accounts

I tried to start mail on my apple id account and it asked me to set up icloud email address. after doing this, i received the message: "problem turning on mail"

They only relate if you are attempting to send an email from your iCloud email account. This account is directly connected to your Apple ID. Can you successfully log into Manage your Apple ID with this ID?
